Evolution of Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode Instability in Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor

چکیده
The nonlinear behavior of the Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode (TAE) driven unstable by energetic ions in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1560 (1994)] is studied. The evolution of instabilities can take on several scenarios: a single mode or several modes can be driven unstable at the same time, the spectrum can be steady or pulsating and there can be negligible or anomalous loss associated with the instability. This paper presents a comparison between experimental results and recently developed nonlinear theory. Many features observed in experiment are compatible with the consequences of the nonlinear theory. Examples include the structure of the saturated pulse that emerges from the onset of instability of a single mode, and the decrease, but persistence of, TAE signals when the applied rf power is reduced or shut off. 52.35.Mw, 52.35.Qz, 52.35.Bj, 52.55.Fa. Alfvén wave propagation in initial value MHD simulation in a tokamak geometry
Alfvén wave propagation in an initial value magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation is reported. The simulation result is compared with the theoretical shear Alfvén wave dispersion relation both in a cylindrical geometry and in a toroidal geometry. Generation of the toroidicity induced Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) frequency gap is observed in the presence of 1/R variation of the toroidal magnetic field....

Linear properties of the reverse shear Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) in a well-diagnosed DIII-D tokamak experiment (discharge #142111) are studied in gyrokinetic particle simulations. Simulations find that a weakly damped RSAE exists due to toroidal coupling and other geometric effects. The mode is driven unstable by density gradients of fast ions from neutral beam injection. Various damping and driv...

The original description of alpha particle driven instabilities in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor in terms of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) remained inconsistent with three fundamental characteristics of the observations: (i) the variation of the mode frequency with toroidal mode number, (ii) the chirping of the mode frequency for a given toroidal mode number, and (iii) the antiballooning ...

An important milestone on the Fast Track path to Fusion Power is to demonstrate reliable commercial application of Fusion as soon as possible. Many applications of fusion, other than electricity production, have already been studied in some depth for ITER class facilities. We show that these applications might be usefully realized on a small scale, in a Multi-Functional Compact Tokamak Reactor ...
